Ever wonder what happens when Narnia ends and the kids have to come back? Laura plays around with the idea of three siblings returned to WWII-era London and how they have coped years later with the trauma of losing their magical world. It's a story told in the POVs of two sisters who managed very differently, and shows us different layers and approaches to grief. Plus, the writing is beautiful. [status: read]
This is probably my favorite read from last year. First off, it's a Black main character by a Black author. Second, it's like The Handmaid's Tale if there were evil witches in the woods. Third, it explores the corruption of religion and the patriarchy better than most other books I've read. Fourth, you should absolutely want to read it now. Oh, and there's an adorable romance too. And some of the prettiest prose I've ever encountered. Also it's adult, NOT YA. [status: read]
#CJsbookbreakdowns are bak with These Violent Delights, a stunning historical fantasy debut about old-world China, two gangs with a violent rivalry, and the two young lovers caught in the middle. This Romeo and Juliet retelling and its poetic language will have you gasping for ore. [status: in progress]
